Diaper rash in babies
Diaper rash (also known as diaper dermatitis) is a common skin problem in children, occurring in the diaper area and other skin folds due to moisture and friction. Red, irritated areas may appear that itch and burn. The causes are moisture, urine, and stool, but also unsuitable diapers or skin warming. Prevention includes regular diaper changes, gentle cleaning, and appropriate creams.
Causes of diaper rash:
Moisture: Prolonged contact with moisture from urine and stool.
Friction: Skin rubbing against skin, for example in skin folds.
Unsuitable diapers: Artificial, non-breathable diaper materials.
Warming: Sweating in the diaper area.
Poor hygiene: Inadequate cleaning and drying of the skin.
What diaper rash looks like:
• Reddened areas, sometimes with pimples, in the diaper area.
• Skin folds (armpits, groin, neck) may also be affected.
• In severe cases, cracks, weeping areas, or blisters may appear.
Prevention of diaper rash:
• Regular diaper changes: Change diapers immediately after a bowel movement and after soiling.
• Gentle cleaning: Wash with lukewarm water, without soap, or use moist wipes for sensitive skin.
• Thorough drying: Dry thoroughly without rubbing.
• Suitable creams: Creams containing zinc, panthenol, or other ingredients.
• Ventilation: Allow the diaper area to air freely.
Treatment of diaper rash:
• Zinc ointment or creams for diaper rash: For a protective layer and to promote healing.
• Herbal decoctions: Chamomile, agrimony, calendula.
• Baby oils: Almond, olive.
• Herbal baths: Chamomile, agrimony.
When to see a doctor:
If the diaper rash does not improve within a few days.
If cracks, weeping areas, or blisters appear.
If fever, pain, or other symptoms appear.
Folk remedies:
• Cold compresses made from calendula, agrimony, horsetail, lavender, sage.
• Decoction of chamomile or agrimony.
• Colloidal silver
Our TIP: To prevent re-irritation, apply Dermaguard barrier cream. This will protect the skin until it is time to wash, powder, and air the rash again. Dermaguard cream forms an invisible protective shield on the skin against most allergens found in the environment (in this case, sweat). Because the allergen or sweat cannot penetrate the skin, it remains unirritated. The protection lasts for around 4-6 hours.
